Apprentice Indenture Rachel Handy to Amelia Shadd 1842

This Indenture made this tenth day of September A.D. 1842 Witnesseth that Kendal Handy of White Clay Creek Hundred NewCastle County & State of Delaware (free man of Colour) Father of Rachel Handy a minor, hath, in the presence and with the approbation of William MCaulley a Justice of the Peace for New Castle County, in the state of Delaware, and in Consideration of the sum of one dollar lawful money of said State, advanced and paid to the Said Kendall Handy by Amelia Shadd & Amelia Turner of said County, put and bound, and by these presents doth put and bind the said Rachel Handy a dk mulatto girl who is now of the age of Eleven years ___ months ____ days as nearly as can be ascertained as an apprentice to the said Amelia Shadd and Amelia Turner for and during the term of seven years     months and      days from the date hereof, the said Rachel Handy to serve the said Amelia Shadd & Amelia Turner as an apprentice for the term aforesaid or until she shall arrive at the age of Eighteen years if that shall happen sooner than the expiration of the time aforesaid, and no longer. And the said Amelia Shadd & Amelia Turner for themselves their executors and administrators doth hereby covenant and construct to teach or cause the said Rachel Handy to be taught the art, trade and business of Housewifery to the best of their skill, knowledge and ability; to give to the said Rachel Handy reasonable education in reading and writing to wit: one years day schooling during her said apprenticeship; to well support and clothe the said Rachel Handy during the said term, and at the regular expiration of her apprenticeship to furnish her with two suits of clothes suitable to her condition, one of which shall be new.

   In Witness whereof the said Kendal Handy and Amelia Shadd have hereunto set their hands and seals respectively, the day and year aforesaid. Kendal Handy his mark {seal}. Amelia Shadd her mark {seal}
