Pass of John Caldwell Negro 1819

      Be it Known that on the day of the date hereof before me Peter Lohra Notary public for the commonwealth of Pennsylvania residing in the City of Philadelphia by lawful authority duly Commissioned and Sworn and by law authorized to administer oaths and affirmations personally appeared John Caldwell aged thirty five years or there about of the height of five feet eleven inches black complecion black eyes and black woolly hair has a mark on the right side of his chin a mole on his nose and is lame in his left hip which occasions the left leg to be shorter than the right who bing by me duly Sworn according to law did depose and say that he is a native of Jones’s hundred in the State of Delaware and is a free man of  colour. And Lavinia Pynass being by me also duly Sworn did depose and Say That She is well acquainted with the before named John Caldwell and verily believes that the contents of his affedavid are Just and true. Javinia Paynass her mark

In Testimony where of I have hereunto Set my hand and affixed my Natural Seal the twenty Seventh day of May 1819 Peter Lohra N.P.

To all to whom these Presents Shall come Greeting. The Bearer hereof John Caldwell the Person named and discribed in the within affidavid under the hand and Seal of Peter Lohra of Philadilphia Notary Public and Whose mark is made hereto to wit. John Caldwell his mark appearing by the Said affidavit and to my satisfaction to be a free many of color and having represented that he has occasion to pass into some of the Neighboring States and into Foreign Countries these are to pray all whom it may concern to permit the Said John Caldwell he demeaning himself well and peacably to pass wheresoever his lawful persuits may call him freely and without let or molestation in going Staying or returning and to give to him all friendly aid and protection. In Faith and Testimony whereof I Robert Wharton Esqr Mayor and Chief Majestrat of the city of Philadelphia have hereunto Set my hand and have caused the Seal of the Said City to be affixed the twenty Seventh day of May 1819.
