I James Whipper Purnell of the city of Camden, in the State of New Jersey (late of the city of Philadelphia) being of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding do make and publish this writing as and for my last Will and Testament hereby revoking and declaring void any former Will by me at any time heretofore made.
First: It is my will and I do direct that my funeral expenses and all my just debts including all encumbrances on my Real Estate be first paid and satisfied by my Executors hereinafter named as soon as conveniently can be after my decease, out of the first moneys that shall come into their hands.
Secondly: I give and bequeath unto my wife Julia A. Purnell all the residue of my personal Estate of whatever kind, after the payment of my funeral expenses and debts as aforesaid to have and to hold to her and her assigns forever.
Thirdly: I give and devise unto my executors hereinafter named all my Real Estate wheresoever situate to have and to hold unto them their heirs and assigns forever in Trust nevertheless for the uses and purposes following, to wit: In Trust to collect the rents and incomes thereof and after paying taxes, insurance and expenses of repairs to pay thereout until my son William Purnell Whipper shall arive at the age of twenty five years the sum of One Thousand Dollars yearly to my wife Julia A. Purnell for her sold use, and to the Guardian of my said son, for the sole use of my said son, the sum of three hundred Dollars yearly until he shall arive at the age of Fifteen years and thence the Sum of five hundred Dollars yearly during the remainder of his minority; and after he shall have attained the age of twenty one years to pay to him my said son the sum of Eight hundred Dollars yearly until he shall attain the age of twenty five years; If my wife should die before my said son shall attain the age of twenty five years then I direct the surviving trustee to increase the aforesaid payments for the use of my said son to the sum of Eight hundred Dollars during his minority and upon his attaining the age of twenty one years, to the sum of One Thousand Dollars yearly until he shall attain the age of twenty five years. If in any year the net income of my Real Estate shall be insufficient to make the yearly payments aforesaid then in order to raise and pay such deficiency I direct and empower the said trustees to sell such portion of my Real Estate as may in their judgment be necessary and most judicious for that purpose, investing the surplus money if any in good interest bearing securities to be appropriated by them the paying of any like deficiencies in the thereafter yearly net income of my Real Estate; And in further Trust, upon my said son ariving at the age of Twenty five ^years to pay to him all moneys or securities in the hands of said trustees or the survivor of them of them and to convey to him my said son in fee, subject to the payment of One thousand Dollars yearly to my said Wife Julia A. Purnell, during her life, all the real Estate so held by them in trust and not sold in accordance with the power hereinabove given. In the event of the death of my son before reaching the age of Twenty five years leaving him surviving lawful children then in Trust to pay to the Guardian of such children said moneys or securities in the hands of said trustees or the survivor of them, and to convey to such children in fee, subject as aforesaid to the payment of One Thousand Dollars yearly to my said wife the Real Estate, so as aforesaid held by said Trustees or the survivor of them; But if my said son should die unmarried before arriving at the age of twenty five years leaving his mother my said Wife him surviving then I direct the said Trustees to sell so much of my Real Estate as in their judgment will be necessary and most judicious to raise with what moneys may be in their hands the sum of Fifteen Thousand Dollars and to pay the same to my said wife for her sole use; and the remainder of my Real Estate to hold for the benefit of my said wife during her natural life and at her death to convey the same to my sister Amelia W. Adams or to her heirs in fee. In all sales of my Real Estate made by the said Trustees under the above powers, I authorize and empower them to make as good conveyances for the same as I could if living do, without any liability on the part of the purchasers for the application of the purchase money.
Fourthly – I direct that all ^the hereinabove bequests and payments of money to my wife are to be by her taken in lieu of all her Estate in dower in my Real Estate.
Fifthly – I appoint my wife Julia A. Purnell to be the sole Guardian of my said son during his minority, and if she should die during his minority then I ^direct and appoint my wife’s mother Eliza J. Anderson to be the sold Guardian of my said son.
And Lastly – I nominate, constitute and appoint my wife Julia A. Purnell and my friend Alexander T. Augusta of Washington D.C. to be the executors of this my last Will and Testament.

Codicil
I James Whipper Purnell of the city of Camden, State of New Jersey, do on the fourth day of December in the year of of our Lord One thousand Eight hundred and Seventy Nine, make and publish this codicil to my last Will and Testament. I do authorize and empower Julia A. Purnell and Alexander T. Augusta the executors in my said Will named or the survivor of them to make sale of all of my Real Estate wheresoever the same may be situate at such time or times as they shall think most for the benefit of my estate either at public or private sale and to convey, assign, transfer and make assurances of said Real Estate as fully as I myself could do if living, and that ^all monies arising from such sales shall be invested or used for my estate as in said Will moneys are directed to be used or invested. Purnell, the executrix named in the within and foregoing Last Will and Testament and Codicil thereto being by me duly sworn did depose and say that the within and foregoing instrument in writing contains the true last Will an Testament and Codicil thereto of James Whipper Purnell, deceased, the testator therein named so far as this deponent knows and as she verily believes; that she will well and truly perform the said Last Will and Testament and Codicil thereto by having first the debts of the said deceased and then the Legacies in the said Will and Codicil specified so far as the goods and chattels, rights and credits of the said deceased can thereunto extend; that she will make and exhibit into the Surrogate’s office of the county of Camden, within the time required by law, a true and perfect inventory of all and singular the goods and chattels, rights and credits of the said deceased that have or shall come to her knowledge or possession; or to the possession of any other person or persons for her use; and render a just and true account when thereunto lawfully required. To all to whom it may concern, Whereas, James Whipper Purnell, late of the city and county of Camden, in the State of New Jersey, deceased, in and by his Last Will and Testament bearing date the Ninth day of December in the year of our Lord, one thousand Eight hundred and Seventy Six, and his Codicil thereto dated December Fourth in the year of our Lord One thousand Eight hundred and Seventy Nine, did appoint the subscriber one of the executors and trustees thereof; now be it known, that for certain good causes me thereunto moving I have and hereby certain good causes me thereunto moving I have and hereby do renounce the said Executorship, and trusteeship, and the execution of said Last Will and Testament and Codicil thereto, and do refuse to take on myself the burden of the same.
