Know all men by these presents that I Ephraim Carter, of Milford ^ Hundred, Kent County and State of Delaware from motives of benevolence and humanity, have manumitted and hereby do manumit and set free from slavey, my negro boy Major late the property of Absalom Townsend, and sold to me by James P. Lofland, aged fourteen years on the twentieth day of June last: on condition, however that he the Said Major shall and do serve me, my executors, administrators or assigns until he shall attain the age of twenty-eight years, which will be till the twentieth day of June eighteen hundred and forty- eight: And I do hereby ^give grant, and release unto the said Major, all my right, title and claim, of in and to his person, labour and service and of in and to the estate and property which he may hereafter acquire or obtain, excepting only his service in manner and during the term above mentioned.
