Know all men by these presents that I Cornelius Battell of Murderkill hundred Kent County and State of Delaware think it wrong and oppressive to hold negroes in objeck slavery do hereby Manumate and set free my Negro Boy Joseph Barratt which I purchased of the Admrs. of Mariam Blackshier deceased after the expiration of five years and three months from the date of these presents and the freedom of the said Joseph Barratt I do hereby Warrant from me my heirs executors administrators or Assigns and from all and every other person or persons whatsoever claiming by through or under me my heirs executors Admrs. Or Assigns and will forever defend by these presents as Witness my hand and seal the fifth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seven.

State of Delaware Kent County, ss} I do hereby certify that on the 5th day of May in the year of our Lord Eighteen hundred and seven personally came Cornelius Battell before me the subscriber one of the Peace for said County and did in my presence and afore me the said Justice subscribe his name to the within Manumission and acknowledge the same as his act and deed deliver it for the purposes therein mentioned. Given under my hand and seal the day and year above written.
