Licence of Joel Clement to a Import a Slave 1835

To the Honorable Samuel M Harrington one of the Judges of the Superior Court of the State of Delaware. The petition of Joel Clements of Kent County in the said State respectfully represents that he has purchased of Joel Clements Junior, son of your petitioner who resides in Queen Anns County Maryland a colored girl by the name of Taney Louisa; that said girl is eight years of age on the first day of October next. the said Joel Clements Junior purchased of a certain James Woolenhan of the State of Maryland and Queen Anns County, who became possessed of the said girl by the intermarriage with a certain Mrs. Ann Stoops of said County of Queen Anns who was the owner of said Girls mother; and further, the said girls mother (and her posterity) is manumitted to be free at the age of thirty four years, and your petitioner further sheweth that he has executed a deed of manumission to the said girl to be free at the age of thirty; and her increase if any, the males at the age of twenty eight, and the females at the age of twenty five. Your petitioner therefore prays your Honor to grant him a license or permit to remove and bring said girl from the State of Maryland into the State of Delaware, according to the act of assembly in such case made and provided, and your petitioner will ever &c. Joel Clements August 18th 1835

The Prothonotary will issue a license to Joel Clement the owner of the within named Slave Teany Louisa authorizing the said Joel Clement to bring the said Slave from the State of Maryland into this State; the fee to the State to be paid before the issuing of the said license. Given under my hand the nineteenth day of August A.D. 1835. S.M. Harrington

State of Delaware Kent County Ss. Be it known that before the Honorable Samuel M. Harrington Esquire Associate Judge of the State of Delaware in and for Kent County, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty five Joel Clement of Murderkill hundred County and State aforesaid, preferred a petition to the said Judge praying the said Judge to grant him a license to bring into this State from the State of Maryland his negro girl a slave named Teany Louisa aged about eight years. And the Said petition having been considered the said Judge did thereupon to wit on the nineteenth, day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty five, grant to the said Joel Clement a license to bring his said negro girl slave into this State from the State of Maryland aforesaid, and to hold her as a slave agreeable to his said petition Given under my hand and seal at my office at Dover the nineteenth day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty five.
