Indenture Alfred Carpenter To Henry Seney 1862

This Indenture made this Eighth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty two witnesseth that Henry Carpenter of Kent County and State of Delaware in consideration of the sum of Thirty eight dollars lawful money of the State of Delaware advanced and paid to the said Henry Carpenter by Henry Seney of Kent County in the said State hath in the presence and with the approbation of Sam F. Hewes a Justice of the Peace for the said County of Kent hath put and bound and by these presents doth put and bind the said Alfred Carpenter a negro boy who is now of the age of Eight years 9 months and Eleven days as nearly as can be ascertained as a servant to the said Henry Seney his executors administrators and assigns for and during the term of Thirteen years ten months and fourteen days from the day of the date hereof the said Alfred Carpenter to serve the said Henry Seney his executors administrators and assigns as a servant for the term aforesaid until he shall arrive at the age of twenty one years if that shall happen sooner than the expiration of the term aforesaid and no longer, And the said Henry Seney for his executors and administrators doth hereby covenant and contact to teach or cause the said Alfred Carpenter to be taught the Art Trade and Business of farming to the best of his skill knowledge and ability; to well support and clothe the said Alfred Carpenter and at the regular expiration of servitude to furnish him with two suits of clothes suitable to his condition and also to pay the said Alfred Carpenter the sum of five dollars in lieu of schooling it being inexpedient to stipulate for education in reading and writing In Witness Whereof the said Henry Seney and Henry Carpenter have hereunto set their hands and seals respectively the day and year aforesaid. Upon application in behalf of the above named Alfred Carpenter for Relief from these Indentures and upon hearing it appearing that the binding was on a condition for repayment of a sum amounting now, with interest and costs To Forty Two Dollars and eighty one cents, which is now repaid in my presence the said Indentures are discharged: and it ^further appearing that the money was offered and declined before this suit was brought, I order that Henry Seeny, the respondent pay the costs of this proceeding, to wit: to ConstableDavis, one dollar and three cents; and to the Witness, William R. Allaband, fifty six cents; John Seen fifty six cents; Morris Poor sixty eight cents; Esq. Hewes Sixty eight cents and to the Recorded for recording Discharge, thirty five cents, to be paid by Petitioner. S. M. Harrington, Chancellor Feb. 12. 1864
