Doct John Burton Manumission to Negro Mary Scott 1830

Know all men by these presents that I John Burton of Camden Kent County State of Delaware purchased at Public Vendue a certain negro Girl as a Slave for life being sold as the property of Tilghman W Scott for the payment of his debts by Thomas Duhadway Constable & I do manumit and absolutely Set free the Said Girl named Mary Scott at the expiration of three years from the first day of January Eighteen hundred & thirty one She then being about Eighteen years old so that after the expiration of sd. term She is hereby liberated from me and my heirs ever claiming her the Said Mary Scott . In witness Whereof I have hereto Set my hand & Seal this 9th Novemberone thousand Eight hundred & thirty 1830. John Burton {seal}

State of Delaware Kent County Ss. I do hereby certify that on the ninth day of November one thousand eight hundred thirty 1830. Personally Came Doct. John Burton before me Joseph Jenkins one of the Justices of the peace in and for Kent County aforesaid and did acknowledge the within manumission and delivered the Same as his act and Deed for the purposes therein mentioned – Given under my hand the day and year above written.
