To all to whom these presents Shall Come Greeting whereas Mariah a negro woman aged Forty five years Formerly the property of John Spencer Esqr Afterwards of Lawrence Riley by marriage with his widow, and on Decease of the said Reiley Purchased by his widow Sarah now the wife of Benjamin Mifflin, being desirous of Freedom & we the Subscribers being Convinced that it is Inconsistent with Christianity and Derogatory of that Just and Equitable Command of the Savior of Mankind to do to others as we would, were we in Like Circumstance they should do to us, to hold Our Fellow Mortals in Slavery, Therefore we grant unto the said Mariah her Natural Right of Freedom, and do hereby henceforth and forever Quit Claim to the Servitude or Slavery of her, and do y these presents Pronounce her to all intents and Purposes a Free woman & Intirely at her Own Disposal, In Testimony and for Confirmation whereof we have hereunto Set Our hands and Affixed Our Seals this Eighteenth Day of December One Thousand Seven hundred & Eighty.
