An Inquisition on the Body  of Samuel a negroe the property of John Allrick Junr taken the 5th Day of August A.D.1811

An Inquisition indented & taken at the House of John Snagg in the Village of Portpenn in the County of Newcastle & Hundred of St Georges the fifth Day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight Hundred & Eleven Before William Carpenter Esqr acting as Coroner of Said County upon the veiw of the Body of Samuel a negroe the property of  John Allrich Junr then & there lying dead upon the Oaths of Jacob Lum John Bates Samuel Morfit Hiram Webb John M Carson Elijah Town Cornelius Morfit Michael Weaver Wm Biddle William Aiken David Moore John Frazer All Good and Lawfull Men of the County aforesaid who being Duly Sworn and affirmed and Charged to examine on the part of the State of Delaware When where how and in what manner the said Samuel came by his Death do say upon their oaths and affirmations respectively the sad Samuel came by his path by Accident & not Otherwise In witness whereof as well the aforesd Coroner as the Jurors Aforesd Have to this Inquisition put their hands & seals the day & year above written W Carpenter

NewCastle County Ss To John Lewis a free Molatto man James Congo & Isac Foreman two free black Men In the Name of the State of Delaware you are all Commanded that laying aside all manner of Excuse whatsoever that you be & appear before me Wm Carpenter Esqr now acting as Coroner at the Village of Portpenn on this present Inst. at four OClock P.M. to give Evidence to the Coroner & the Jury on the part of the State of Delaware touching the Death of Samuel a Negroe now laying dead at the Piers below portpenn, Herein fail not on the pain of Twenty Dollars Each given under my hand & Seal this 5th Day of August 1812 W Carpenter
