Manumission of Diana & her children by Thomas Tomlinson 1834

Know all men by these presents that I Thomas Tomlinson of Kent County and State of Delaware from motives of benevolence and humanity have manumited and hereby do manumit and set free from slavery a certain negro woman named Diana and all her children that she now has or may have except Catharine born the twenty sixth day of April eighteen hundred and seventeen, James born the twenty seventh day of January eighteen hundred and nineteen which afore named negros Catharine & James are to serve the aforenamed Thomas Tomlinson and Rachel his wife during their natureal lives, that is to say the natureal lives of the afsd Thomas Tomlinson & Rachel his wife and no longer and after our decease they the said Catharine and James shall be deemed free and considered to be to all intents and purposes and shall be entitled to all the rights and liberties that a free negro or mulatto may or can enjoy in the State afsd. In witness hereof I the said Thomas Tomlinson have hereunto set my hand & seal this the 16th day of Auguste eighteen hundred and thirty four 1834. Thomas Tomlinson {seal}

Signed, sealed and delivered in the presence of Elias Fleming George Williams

Kent County Ss. Personally appeard Thomas Tomlinson this 16th day of August A.D. 1834 before the subscriber a justice of the Peace for the County aforesaid and acknowledged the above manumission to be his act and Deed. S. Grace Just P.
