Coroner’s Inquisition into the Death of Negro Boy John Enslaved of George Cummins 1793

Delaware State, Kent County Ss. An Inquisition taken at the House of George Cummins in duck Creek hundred in the County afsd before me John Chicken Esqr. Coroner of the said County to enquire into the manner and way that a Certain negro boy named  John belonging to the said George Cummins Came by his death; upon the oath and affirmation of William Jordon, James Snow, Abraham Pearce, Benjamin Rumsey, William Denny, Israel Peterson, James McDaniels, John Cahoon, Treadwell Manlove, Solomon Dawson, George Williams and William Leatherberry. good and Lawfull Men of My bailiwick; defend that after Examining the witnesses Produced that on sunday the ninth day of this Inst about 11 OClock he the said negro John went to Joseph Nocks mill Pond in Company with a negro boy named Daniel, belonging to Timothy Cummins, and then and there went into said mill Pond; and not being able to swim, was there ^Casually drowned; In Withness whereof as will the said Jurors as the said Coroner hath hereunto set our hands ^& Seals this 10th day of June 1793.
