Manumission Negro Charity from James Caldwell
Know all men by these presents that James Caldwell (free negro) of Murderkill hundred Kent County and State of Delaware, for divers good causes and considerations me hereunto moving, do by these presents, manumit, liberate and set free, my wife Charity, which I purchased of Richard Tilghman the fourth, as appears by a receipt from the said Richard Tilghman the fourth dated the thirteenth day of Augst. in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and one, in the presence of James Hart a witness thereto which said receipt is recorded in the Rolls office at Dover in and for the County aforesaid in Book I. Vol 2nd. folio 268. reference there to being had may more fully and at large appear. and I do hereby release the said Charity from any further claim of me my heirs executors or administrators, and that she shall be entitled to all the right, priviledges and immunities which a free Negro or Mulatto may or can have or enjoy by the laws of this state. In Testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand and affixed my seal this 5th day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and six. James Caldwell {seal}

State of Delaware Kent County Sst.} I do certify that on the day & year mentioned in the above manumission James Caldwell (free negro) appeared before me the subscriber one of the Justices of the peace in and for the County afsd. and acknowledged the above manumission to be his act and deed and desired that the same might be recorded as such.
